Tilak Hettige grew up in Sri Lanka and was attracted to the art of photography from an early age. He began to work in the photography industry in 1980 in Sri Lanka. He moved to the United States in 1984 and worked in the industry for many years. He studied at New England School of Photography in Boston. Tilak first won international recognition when he became the Photographer of the Year in the International Photographic Society, Washington D. C. in 1997; since then, he has won many subsequent awards and traveled to around 50 countries. Tilak's work has been published in several media and also as creative fine arts both in the Philippines and outside; several of them are in well-known private collections around the world. .

His latest publications include Saffron Robes: A Photographic Essay on Buddhist Monks which includes vibrant images from 14 different countries and Tilaka: The Spiritual Third Eye an exotic photographic exploration of the use of tilaka (the forehead symbol)in diverse cultural contexts. At the moment he is finishing two more photography books on different themes .

When Tilak is not traveling on assignment, he resides in Manila and conducts monthly photography workshops. As an ex-chemical engineer, Tilak is able to superbly blend the science and art of photography. He is currently a member of the prestigious Camera Club of the Philippines and a faculty member of the Philippine Center for Creative Imaging (PCCI). There he conducts his solo lecture series on Inner Vision.
